Girls Girls Girls had Heather Urquhart of Sing it! UK, come coach us this weekend. IT WAS AMAZINGLY FUN!
One of the exercises she had us do was to sing duets to each other in gibberish. This video is of cast members Shana Merlin and Sarah Marie Curry. There was no setup, this was purely inspired my emotion in the moment. Tons! Of! Fun!

We usually opt for piano as accompaniment, but for a show this past February we ended up with guitar due to scheduling conflicts. This show was one of those where we all walked away feeling like it wasn't our best work but then people approached us afterward and told us how much they loved it. I think guitar music adds a different flavor than we are used to... so we might have thought " that was different..." while someone else thought " Wow! That was different!" I always find it interesting how even though it's our job to be playful and have a fun time, we can often get hyper-critical as performers and miss out on that feeling of "Hey! We just made that up!" Anyway, it's a short show, only 30 min. or so; and there are some really cool things about it, so I'm posting it!

OH MAN! Love it!
It's something I'm having to constantly work on and remind myself to do to sing from my training and allow myself to sound beautiful when I sing. I have a tendency to sing silly (and dance with my shoulders by my ears... but that's another issue). So, it's absolutely lovely to hear such gorgeous singing in an improvised number.

Yes! Girls Girls Girls is the name of the troupe. We are a collective of nine ladies located in Austin, TX (USA). www.gggimprov.comWe are the longest running all female troupe as well as the longest running musical improv troupe here in Texas. We've won local theater performance awards, played in lots of festivals and are currently gearing up for our Spring Run which begins in just a few weeks. We like to think of our shows as "Broadway Style" meaning that our stories have an opening number, sometimes follow a couple of characters or one hero, and have a closing number (plus all of the lovely songs in between). For Spring run we will be doing a show in which the stories will play with the dynamics of backstage drama effecting front stage performance. Scripted examples: Smash, Singing in the Rain, Kiss me Kate etc. While we will have a few set and costume pieces available to play with the whole thing will be improvised.

This song is Summer Isn't Fun.
We take a single suggestion, usually a location to place our musical. This one was Backyard the Musical and these little girls thought summer was the worst... and with good reason!

Hi! My name is Aden Kirschner. I am an improviser, teacher and trainer in Austin, Texas (USA!). I perform with Girls Girls Girls Improvised Musicals, the Known Wizards and various short-run shows, some musical some not, as they come my way. I started in musical theater when I was six years old, added improv to the equation when I was twelve, and I've been teaching improv since I was in high school. Currently I teach for the Merlin Works Institute for Improvisation, and for the most part I'm the musical improv teacher lady. I teach all the stuff, but the majority of my classes are improv singing basics, improvised musical theater numbers, and full-length improvised musicals. I'll also be flying out to Oregon at the end of this month and teaching a lyrical intensive workshop that I think will be a lot of fun. Improv singing is the best! I often think of my classes as the quick trip down improv lane. All of the things that are required to be great improvisers are required in larger quantities for making up songs and sharing them with scene partners! LOVE IT!
